University of Richmond

Planning Your Program

Richmond offers two majors and one minor through the Environmental Studies Program. Once students declare the environmental studies major, typically some time during their sophomore year, they are assigned a faculty member who will serve as their advisor and help them develop a program of study to achieve their educational goals.

The environmental studies curriculum is divided into core courses, mandatory for all majors, and electives. Core courses provide students with a base in science, ethics, economics and public policy. Students begin to consider human-nature interactions and then add depth to their curriculum by taking courses that explore their personal interests.

Students can choose between meeting the requirements for the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree. The Bachelor of Science degree integrates rigorous training in environmental science with study in the social sciences and humanities. The Bachelor of Arts degree emphasizes economic, policy and international aspects of environmental issues. Both degrees can be combined with one of two concentrations in either environmental science or environment and society.

Dual Degree Program

For goal-oriented students who are dedicated to earning at least a Masters degree in environmental studies or forestry, the University of Richmond offers a dual degree program with Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment. Students complete three years at Richmond and then two years at Duke; at the end of their fourth year, they receive their undergraduate degree from Richmond and at the end of their fifth year, they receive their Masters degree from Duke.
